A BRIEF HISTORY

Eldon Street had a theatre, later converted to a cinema known as The EMPIRE. Following a fire in 1956 it was re-built as The GAUMONT cinema, a name later changed to ODEON.

Following the closure of the ABC-RITZ in Peel Street, the Odeon was converted to a two screen operation, which traded very successfuly for a number of years. However new owners of the Odeon circuit closed the cinema and sold it in 2005,leaving the town without a cinema.

Rob Younger of Propix Limited (A Cinema Engineering Company), together with Gerald Parkes of Parkway Entertainment Comany Limited (Cinema Proprietors), joined forces to re-open the cinema. A new company was formed and in 2007 the cinema doors were again open to the public.

Rob and Gerald both have previous connections to cinema in Barnsley, Rob started his career at the Odeon as a Projectionist and Gerald doing a spell in the same capacity at the Ritz.
